While braces are the most common orthodontic appliance, there are several other appliances available for correcting certain bite problems or malocclusions. Many of these appliances work best when patients may still have some of their primary or baby teeth. For this reason we agree with the American Association of Orthodontics that a child should be seen by an orthodontist at age 7 (see Early Treatment).
